Coroners and Justice Bill to provide for tiered notification - February 2009

Coroners and Justice Bill to provide for tiered notification

The Coroners and Justice Bill which amends the Data Protection Act 1998 is progressing through Parliament.  Likely to be one of the more controversial aspects of the Bill is the power for Ministers to allow significant data sharing between departments. Less controversial are additional powers for Information Commissioner to stiffen enforcement.

One measure which will have a wide ranging impact is a change to notification allowing the introduction of a tiered fee basis. It is not yet known whether the tiering will be based on volume of personal data controlled or on other financial criteria.
